New York State to Toronto by Train

New York State to Toronto by Train

Postby Tom McMillan » Sat Mar 06, 2010 6:20 pm

We have had a query from one of our members via email can anyone help answer it as I've only ever done road trips in the US and Canada! "An interesting trip I’m thinking of doing this summer would be to travel mostly by train from Newburgh or White Plains, N.Y. to Buffalo, N.Y and then to Toronto and back. Heard it might be possible to do it all by train."

It is aprox. a 9 hour drive from Toronto to New York, New York. (longer if there are lines at the border/traffic). It is about 788/km or 490 miles. If you calculate you km per gallon and times that by the current fuel prices, you can get an ball park of the cost to drive. Don't forget to consider the wear and tear on you vehicle.
To take the Amtrack, you can get on in Toronto at Union Station and with one changeover, it is aprox. a 12 hour ride.
A round trip ticket will cost $82 USD each way. If you don't like driving, it may be an option for you!
If you are taking the train keep in mind that customs frequently delays the train as it crosses the border. I have waited in excess for 2 hours to get the train out of michigan to toronto. The same delay is possible if you are going the other way.

Thanks........

We took this trip over the summer on Amtrak's Maple Leaf. There was a slight delay at customs - around 30 minutes. The train ride is quite scenic, the Amtrak dinette is pretty bleak..I would definitely bring my own picnic/food. Enjoy!
