Route notes
We were keen to get to Ko Pha-Ngan without the help of any agents. The first step was easy we just had to walk to the main road and catch a bus heading east. The first bus (with air-con according to the timetable in the hotel) never showed up but the second one did. It was full and very hot and we were the only tourists, but an experience non the less. After a few stops we got a seat each and tried to survive the relentless heat as we headed to Ko Phn-Ngan via Surat Thani. It took us about 2hrs to get to Surat Thani. We were really keen to stay away from agents but we got droped off a long way from the harbour and met by a friendly agent! After getting something to eat and watching Thai boxing on the TV with the drivers for well over an hour a 100 seater bus showed up to take us to the harbour. The overpriced bus ticket also covered to boat and the journey ended in the opposite as it started with us surrounded be tourists and no locals. Once on Ko Pha-Ngan we had the choice of dozens of Sawngthaew's (pick-ups) to take us to our hotel and plenty of people to share the cost of the journey with.
