Route notes

They call this train the TranzCoastal, with the main stop on the way to Christchurch being Kaikoura (great place to see large pods of dolphins!). The train passes through farmlands with views onto rugged mountains, it hugs the coast far large parts (hence the name!) giving us the chance to spot some seals along the way. Make sure to head to the back of the train to find the outdoor carriage.
