We booked a bus through one of the many travel agents in the centre of town the day before we were due to depart Hanoi. The bus we got was smart and comfortable with air-con. Make sure to turn up early for the bus as ours was overbooked, although they seemed to be organising a second bus which would run an hour after ours. There was no toilet but regular stops were made along the way. For some reason we had to wear badges, maybe so the driver and conductor did not lose us at the food stops or border crossing. As well as the food stops snack food was provided! The main memory I took form this leg of our journey was the border crossing. Our bags were searched in great detail, presents unwrapped, digital camera photos analyses and CD’s played. I found it interesting although the whole process did last about an hour and a half!
