Scotrail Caledonian Sleeper trains run every night except Saturday from London to the Highlands (Fort William, Inverness) and lowlands (Glasgow and Edinburgh), stopping at numerous places en route and allowing the most magical train ride in the UK. The facilities have character, especially the bar which is the only place on the UK rail network where you can relax on a sofa whilst drinking reasonably priced beers and whiskys, eating Scottish food and watching the world go by! Prices can be amazingly cheap using 'bargain berths,' and the use of time is much better than flying, given that you're travelling overnight. Highly recommended!
