The best thing about getting the Caledonian Sleeper is that real travel time is about 30 mins as you are asleep the rest of the time.
I was able to board the train about 45 mins before it was due to depart which was great as it meant that I had time to get my stuff sorted and get as much sleep as possible. I took the cheapest ticket I could (as a very late booking) which meant that I had to share with one other person. The cabin is very small (although the bed is a decent size) so if you don't know the other person you soon will! The wakeup call in the morning was half an hour before arrival, although you do not have to leave the train for 45 mins after arriving in London so I had plenty of time for a shave and a wash once my travel companion had left. Breakfast was provided, only OJ and a biscuit but there was a buffet cart and of course places to eat at the station.
Sleeper service to London from Edinburgh. Fall asleep in Edinburgh and wake up in London for breakfast, plus save on a nights accommodation... Select bargain berth on the caledonian website to get the discounted rate that needs to be booked in advance.
I do this route quite regularly, and it's much more convenient, and quicker, than flying. The train line is East Coast, which has recently be re-nationalised, so hopefully there will continue to be improvements in the near future
