We booked our tickets at the Malaysian train station the day before we travelled. It’s outside the city centre but within walking distance of the tour bus route! We booked kelas superior (CMB) tickets. The standard of the train was not as good as expected but adequate. I can’t remember exactly how many trains a day there were, 5 springs to mind, enough to give you some flexibility with your travel plans anyway. The immigration set up is a bit weird as you go through Malaysian immigration at the station and then get on the train. After about an hour we pulled up at a station which was for the Singapore immigration. This was a much slower and rigorous check point which took about an hour to get through. Once back on the train the landscape was a bit disappointing as we passed one palm oil plantation after another.
